How often do you look at your books?  If not very often, it is probably because they aren’t very useful, so why should you look at them?  The language of your business, of your school, the Marvel Comic Book story of your adventure, is written in the numbers.  It just has to be presented to you in a way that is relevant to you.  That is when you need a translator who is fluent in both business and bookkeeping.

One time I was in a bjj class in LA being taught by a Brazilian black belt.  At the end of the class he was giving that lecture on how to live life that black belts from Brazil seem to enjoy giving.  It was in his best Bringlish…. I asked the guy beside me what he was saying.  He told me nobody understands him, but that everybody just nods and says thank you master.

It is like that sometimes for business owners when they talk to their accountant. They don’t really understand, and even if they do, there is no useful information there for them to take immediate action on.

But… I know guys who make decisions based on current/ (to the day, often to the hour) numbers. If you have a good in-house bookkeeper, and that great accountant setting them up, you can take action before your opponent (your competition) can react. The same qualities, the same systems, the same work ethic, the same awareness, the same ability to perceive any small change, decide what to do about it and take immediate action work for your business just like they do in a fight. In both cases you are fighting for you, your family and the people around you who are depending on you.

In future posts I will cover different aspects of how to get those great numbers, how your books will actually become another coach who is right there with you every day, letting you know what’s working and what’s not, etc.

What are the things most important for you to know about your business? New students per month? Revenue per class? Per instructor? What percentage continue after the initial contract expires? What students end up taking private lessons? How many tours of the facilities are given per day or week? How people find out about you? How much you are spending for different kinds of marketing? Many of these things can be presented to you in your regular books, even non-financial information.

Send me an email telling me what you would like to know how to do, or what you wish your books would tell you (the things you actually use to help you make decisions). The things people ask about the most will get pushed to the front of the line.
